Deleting uninstall directories

T

Tony Marsillo

To gain additional hard disk space on a laptop, is it OK to delete the
"$hf_mig$, "$NTServicePackUninstall$" and "$NTUninstallKB...$" directories?
The laptop runs fine, so I don't think I will need to do any uninstalls.

Thanks

You should not delete the $hf_mig$ folder.

"$NTServicePackUninstall$"

As long as you see no future need to uninstall the service pack, you
can delete it.

Alternatively, if you make a backup of the folder to e.g. a CD, you
can put it back if you need to uninstall the SP. After restoring the
backup, run %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
to start the process.

and "$NTUninstallKB...$" directories?

As long as you see no future need to uninstall the updates, you can
delete those folders.

These are the uninstall routines for various service pack and or hotfixes.
If you don't expect to ever require to back down from them then yes you can
delete them.

Hi

Note that the $hf_mig$ folder has nothing to do with uninstalling
a hotfix, and the folder should not be deleted.

Thanks to Torgeir and Dave for you help.

I also found these two folders in c:\ , they also seem to be related to
Service Packs, is it safe to delete these?

Those were probably temp file stores that did not get cleaned up by some
install routine but I can't be sure without knowing more. You could always
move them; then in a week or so if no problems arise delete them.

Hi

This is leftovers from some updates, those folders are supposed to be
removed by the updates themselves. Sometimes this fails, and then you
can delete those folders manually yourself.

"$NTUninstallKB...$" directories?

Tony,

There's a tool called Update Cleanup that makes it easy to delete those
$NtUninstallKB folders and clean
up the related Registry entries at the same time. It frees up alot of
hard disk space. Although it is not
free, you are given a lengthy free trial which is more than enough time
for you to clean up these folders.

I got my copy at http://www.pcshareware.com/update.htm

No need to recommend a pay program. This can be done easily by hand or
using a free utility on Doug Knox' site.
