Deleting search history

I am using Windows Vista.
I have deleted a lot of ".jpg" files and yet they still are listed when
search is selected from the Start Button with "jpg" as the searching
criterea. I have defragmented my hard drive and it still "remembers" their
old location on the disk. How do I erace all references to these already
deleted files.
Thanks,

Hi, JPSR.

How recently did you delete those files?

The Indexing service needs some time to re-index. If it did it in "real
time", we would all be complaining that we can't get any work done because
the Indexer is always using the CPU and hard drive. I'm not sure how long
is "long enough", but try it again tomorrow.

There are experts here who can provide a better answer, but I'm not one of
them. :^{

Thanks for answering R.C.,
Some files that were deleted at least a week ago still are found when
searched. Is there a way to give the re-indexing routine a nudge. Where would
I find more info on this?
Thanks again.

You can rebuild the index in Control Panel (Classic View) > Indexing
Options. Click on the Advanced button.
