Deleting Pagefile and Hiberfil.sys for imaging

I am about to make an image of a new XP Pro SP3 machine using Image
for Linux. The Hyberfil.sys is over 3 Gigs, and the Pagefile.sys is
over 2Gigs. Clearly if I restore an image at a later date neither file
would be of any use. Can I delete/shrink either or both after booting
up in Linux to make the image smaller?

Thanks,

David

Yes, I do it all the time.

Most imaging tools provide an exclusion table of files or file types to
omit. Does your Linux tool have such an option. If not, then you can
remove both files and XP will recreate at next boot. Only problem is
the size of the files may cause them to not be placed optimally on the
Windows volume.

Neither file can be "deleted"

you need to go into the control panel and turn off hibernation and reduce
your page file to "none"

Yes, both files can easily be deleted when the OP boots the machine with a
Linux boot disk.

Alternatively, you can fill them up with zeros beforehand. The files
will be compressed to a minimum this way but will remain on its specific
position (if you consider a strict layout). It just makes sense on
special cases though. I personally defrag notebook HDDs externally
(connected to desktop PC) with respected, adapted and idle prepared
layout.ini and disabled BootOptimizeFunction.
