Deleting messages from Outlook

I have a person who is trying to delete some messages from her sent box. She
doesn't want to delete them all. She scrolls through until she finds one she
wants to keep, highlight the ones above and hits delete. Outlook freezes up
everytime and she'll have to cntrl+alt+del everytime to get out. I suggested
that maybe she delete 1 at a time and it worked fine but I guess she got
ahead of the program and it happened again. Is there a simple reason why
that happens? I told her to go through all of her sent messages and put them
somewhere else seperate. After she's done that, I said I would take care of
it for her. I'm sure she is just doing more than the system can handle. She
has Outlook 2000.

Thanks.

How many does she delete at once? Also; is she using SHIFT+DEL or just DEL?
In case of the last it is actually a move to Deleted Items action which
takes longer. When you are on Exchange it could in fact perform the action
while "hanging". Outlook 2000 doesn't inform you about it that the action is
going to take a while (Outlook 2002 will and Outlook 2003 will even better).
Already installed Office 2000 Service Pack3 + additional hotfixes?

Have this other person compact their message store before making all those
changes which force a reindex operation. Modifying a smaller database takes
less time.
