deleting highlighted with backspace

With previous versions of word I was able to highlight some letters or words
and press backspace and they would all delete. I could also highlight some
letters and press another letter and replace all of the highlighted letters
with it.
Now with word 2003 backspace does nothing and if I push another letter it
just inserts it where the cursor is.
Does anyone know how to change this back to how I'm used to?

thanks in advance,

Ian

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces
selection" box | OK.
