deleting _vti_cnf contents? dumb idea or clever trick?

G

George Orwell

I had this problem when I publish:
it transfers files but hangs at the stage
"processing web updates for"
So I searches many webmaster forums, and one person said he
cured this by deleting contents of _vti_cnf (which one was
not specified).
Now most say never touch anything starting with _vti or else
your website goes kaput.
Next I fired up spare computer which had an old Frontpage
website on it. I went to My Webs\_vti_cnf and deleted
the html files. I started FP and it hesitated for 5 seconds
but no error message. Then I clicked on Reports and saw
what I expected. Next I recalculated hyperlinks, and this
took a while (about 600 pictures in this website).
Then I looked at _vti_cnf and the files were recreated.
I compared with backups and only the lines starting with
_vti_sync were not there (which refer to the webhost server).

So my question is: can _vti_cnf files get corrupted, and
is euthanasia and revivification better than letting them
stumble on?

Yes they can get corrupted
- do not delete them

Instead run a Tool Recalculate Hyperlinks to update/correct them
- both on local and remote site in FP

What often gets corrupted and out of sync are your web cache files
- those you should regularly delete those before Starting FP
An easy way to clear them is the FP cleaner
