Deleted e-mails remain in my inbox

When I delete a message it stays in my inbox until I empty the deleted
folder. Is there a way to change it so it so that they no longer appear in
my inbox?

If you are using IMAP.

While in your IMAP mailbox go to the Edit menu and choose "Purge Deleted
Messages"

I've never heard of IMAP so doubt that I'm using it. Until a few weeks ago
if I deleted a message it would automatically be moved from my inbox to the
deleted folder. Now they sit in my inbox until I empty the deleted folder.
Since I can receive up to 300 emails in a day, I would rather not have to
empty/purge the deleted folder every time I want to remove deleted emails
from my Inbox. This would not be a huge problem except that they look
identical to items I have read but have not deleted.
