Delete key works only for characters, not paras. What happened?

My Delete key no longer works in Word and Outlook when I select paragraphs to
be deleted. Deletes *letters* to the right when cursor is in middle of a
line. Message appears at lower left-hand corner of the Word screen when I
select a block of text and hit the Delete key:

"Delete Block? No (Yes)"

I press"Y" and the block of text is deleted.

Delete key works fine in Excel I suspect I have inadvertently turned
something off (or on?).

In Word, click on Tools | Options | General | uncheck the two
boxes for WordPerfect help and navigation | OK.
