Delete key does not work in Word 2003

In Word and Email (Word as editor) if I put the curser between text and hit
the delete key it does not start deleting characture spaces. I have to
highlight the characture to delete and select delete. All other programs
appear to work fine.

Look down at the bottom left of the Word window (the status bar): do you see
any message down there when you press Delete?

Does delete work the way you'd expect if you hold CTRL when starting Word (to
put it into Safe mode)?
