Delete key dead

Hi willing helpers, I have asked this question on other forums without an
answer that solves my problem. Like <pleasehelpme> 24/2/05 my Delete key has
suddenly become ineffective in WORD but OK in an email mode, it also works in
the "File Name" field in the box that opens after clicking on the "File" &
"Save As" tabs. I followed the directions given by Jay Freedman and the box
next to Word perfect is not ticked so what other setting needs changing to
rectify this niusance please? The only way I can delete text is to highlight
it and hit the Backspace key or position the cursor at the end of it and keep
the key depressed. Some have suggested some tweaks in the registry but that
for me is a no go area as dabbling with it can cause serious problems
[especially for the novice who is ignorant of it's workings]. I am using
Version 2002 XP with SP2. Thanks Rupert.

There are two boxes on the General tab of Tools | Options that refer to
WordPerfect. Both must be unchecked.

How about Tools>Options - Edit, 'Typing replaces selection'?

Open Tools | Customize and click on Keyboard... Choose any command at random
(the first one will do) and in the "Press new shortcut key" box, press the
Delete key. You should then see "Currently assigned to: EditClear." If you
*don't* see that, then select All Commands under categories and scroll down
to EditClear. Press the Delete key and click Assign.

HI Suzanne. There are times when we hear such statments as "Don't patronize
me", (eg) when someone is deemed to be praising someone out of all proportion;
in a word, "exagerating". Having said that what I am now about to write may
appear at first sight, to "tar me with that very brush", but I am happy to
run that risk because I was delighted to read your answer which has, (in a
couple of mouse clicks) solved my problem.
Why am I so ecstatic? because over the past couple of weeks I have; asked
numerous friends & written to many forums (help sites) asking this question
which must have been read by countless people including [no doubt] some who
are experts at this I.T. stuff, yet you are the first to come up with the
answer. In appreciation I shall forward it to each of the forums aluded to,
giving full credit to your good self Suzanne. A very merry Christmas & Happy
New Year to you and all the readers of this forum. Rupert.
PS. I sure would like to be able to correspond with
you by email but I know how imprudent it is to divulge addresses which are
visible to all. What a pity that the webmaster of this site would not
introduce a tab like that found on <blacktoppstudios.com> which enables those
registered to send a private message (PM) without the destination address
being seen by anyone, including the sender. So how about it Webmaster [if you
perchance read this letter] why not introduce this feature? RB

I'm glad that worked for you. My email address is available in my profile,
which you can see by clicking on my name in this message.

What I'm curious about, though, is how the Delete key could become
unassigned to EditClear. I'm pretty sure you're not the first person this
has happened to, but it's a mystery how it happens.
