Delete File on Removable Media Crashes XP

Hi,

I have a system running Windows XP SP2. The system has a built-in card reader.

I very seldom use the card reader; however, when working with a compact
flash card that I will use in a new camera, I experienced a troubling
phenomenon.

If I explore the files on the card, and attempt to delete any files on the
card, the system immediately reboots. At startup the message I receive
regarding the crash references a Mini.dump and a sysdata.xml file in the
error report.

(I believe I saw this same phenomenon with a secure digital card in the same
reader last week.)

I can format the card with no problem. However, if I attempt to delete the
directory that any files are in, I am told that either the files are in use,
or I don't have the authority to delete them (or something similar).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Jeff

Hi,

This is an update to my earlier post.

About a year ago I had read an article about mounting removable devices
(such as secure digital and compact flash cards) to folders in Windows. I
happened to think about making that change last year, and wondered what
affect removing that association would have on this problem.

I removed the mounting instruction from both devices and assigned standard
drive letters to them from the available list. I was able to delete files
from both card types without crashing Windows. (Prior to this, I confirmed
that simple task of deleting one file from either card type would crash
Windows.)

I will gladly give up the benefits of the mounted drives for these cards
just so that I can use them in my system reliably. (If there are orther
options for mounting the cards that won't crash the system, I would
appreciate hearing about them.)

Thanks

Jeff
