Delete a phantom email

Yesterday Windows Mail indicated that I had received an email, and the Inbox
line in the left pane indicated "(1)" next to it -- but there was no email. I
went to my provider's (Verizon) website to check the inbox there, and there
was a suspicious email with just a link in it. Of course I deleted it without
clicking on the link. But the "(1)" is still in Windows Mail next on the
Inbox line. I receive other emails fine, but the number listed is always one
more than the actual visible emails. How can I fix that indicator?

Try the following key strokes while viewing the inbox, Left Alt, V, V, G.

Can you now see the message?

Repeat the key strokes to revert to your previous view.

Thanks for your suggestion, but it didn't work. An additional column appeared
with those keystrokes, but the message didn't show up.

Extra column?

Then, while viewing the inbox go to view>current view>disable 'group
messages by conversation.

Does it show up now?

Cancel everything. I just discovered that an old email, one that I read and
referred to repeatedly, was suddenly in bold again! As soon as I removed the
boldface, the number next to "Inbox" in the left pane disappeared. I have no
idea why that old email suddenly changed to boldface, but that problem is
solved. Thanks very much for your help anyway.
