"Delayed Write" $Mft ??

Guest

Sorry to be posting a bunch of things at once! :(

As I mentioned in my other post, weird things are going on with my machine
-- it said it needed to check the disk when it booted up yesterday, and
apparently found a bunch of issues... so who knows what's up now!

Every few minutes everything freezes for about 30 sec to a minute (seems
like forever!). Then it pops up an error bubble from the taskbar tray that
warns about the "delayed write failure" of C:\$Mft.

It has also popped up a regular error popup window with:
Application popup:
Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for
the file C:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a
failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save
this file elsewhere.

What in the world is C:\Mft, and how can I fix this?

Thanks in advance!!

An interesting result from Google

How large is your hard disk and how much free space?

To increase you free space on your C select Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and
remove all but the latest System Restore points? Restore points can be quite
large.

You should use Disk CleanUp regularly to Empty your Recycle Bin and
Remove Temporary Internet Files. Whenever you remove redundant files you
should always run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

This typically indicates a hardware issue. The $MFT is the master "index"
for all of the files on the drive. By default, write caching is usually
enabled on a drive. When a change is made to the drive, it isn't
immediately written to the drive but cached - although it the write
operation is signaled as immediately performed. You can get error messages
like this with USB/Firewire drives that "tell" Windows that they are fixed
drives even though they are really removabled drives. I'd suggest the
following:

- Turn off write caching on the drive and see if these error messages still
appear
- If they do, contact the drive manufacturer and run the drive diagnostic
tool for that drive and see if it finds any hardward related issues
