Delayed delivery not working

Hi all,

The problem I have is that I want to send a reminder message out to all
users but I want to delay delivery till after I have left from the office. I
compose the message and go into the options section and select Do not deliver
before and enter correct time and date. I click on send and message is
placed in Outbox. I turn off my computer and leave the office. When I come
back the next day for instance and turn on my computer and launch Outlook the
message is still sitting in the Outbox but after half a minute or so it gets
sent. This defeats the purpose of delaying the message because now users
have received it too late.

I am running Outlook 2003 with SP1

Can anyone help me?

Thanx in advance

Don't Shutdown the computer.

Logoff instead.

The computer must be on for Outlook to send the message.

Thanx spechul but I am still not convinced.

When we were running Outlook 98 there was no need to leave the machine on
and logged off for this to work. Has something changed with this version?

Cheers

You were probably using Exchange with Outlook 98 and were using a
server-side rule. Don't log off either! Logging off will close Outlook.
Leave Outlook running.

Thanks BillR.

Sorry to keep bugging you with this but are you able to direct me to a
knowledge base outlining what I need to do to check/create the server-side
rule.

Again, thanx in advance

You are using Exchange?

I can't locate a KB article on this. You might try a search yourself.

All I can see is one that will defer delivery by a set number of minutes.
The maximum seems to be 120.
Whether this would be a sever or client rule might depend on the initial
condition. You'd definitely need to ensure that "on this machine only" is
not checked.
I'd just leave Outlook running and get better control.
That's all I can suggest. See if anyone else can help you further.

BillR,

Played around with Outlook settings and discovered the issue was USE CACHED
EXCHANGE MODE. By enabling it you basically download mail file and work of
it rather than working off the server. It allows you to work offline. I
disabled it and this resolved my issue.

Thought you might appreciate the feedback.

Cheers

As Bill said, though, leaving Outlook running will also send the message at
the proper time. Its just that in cached mode the message is held on your
computer until the proper time. In online mode, it is held on the server
so you can exit Outlook.
