delay returning from hibernation

Jeff

I use both a password and hibernation in my laptop running XP SP2 and they
run fine. There is one annoying feature though. When I open the laptop lid
(which returns the PC from hibernation) there is a delay of 2-3 seconds
before the screen appears which asks for my password. Once I enter the
password, everything goes swiftly and fast.

What is causing the delay before the request for the password? I believe
someone once told me it had to do with the PC looking for its various drives
(or something similar). Is there a way to shorten that delay where the PC
seems to be doing "nothing"? I have the notebook set to boot from the HD
first.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

The 2-3 second delay you speak of would be considered normal. When your
computer goes into hibernation, everything you were doing at the time,
(everything that is in RAM) is written to the HD. It takes the 2-3 seconds
to "wake up", go to the HD, retrieve what was in memory, and put it back
there, so all appears as it did prior to hibernating.

If only I could wake up and be ready to go that fast!

Thanks Curt.

You could be right, but I am not sure that is the part I am talking about. I
forgot to mention that I use 2 passwords: a BIOS password and a user
password.

After the 2-3 seconds, the BIOS password screen comes up. Thatn is the one
that permits it to even access the HD. I then enter my BIOS (HD) password
and then the bar appears on the bottom that for 2-3 seconds "reads" the
hibernation file and opens Windows to where it asks for my user password
before opening the desktop.

It's the 2-3 seconds before the appearance of the BIOS password that I was
wondering about. I think the only thing the PC is doing there is searching
for a boot HD. I was wondering if there was a BIOS setting to shorten that.

Hi Jeff,

I see what you're saying, but I must defer to someone who knows a little
more about it than I do.

Any takers??

That has nothing at all to do with Windows XP and everything to do with
the particular brand and model of your laptop. If you don't want to do
the exploring on your own, contact the manufacturer tech support.
