Defragmenter starts but does not complete

I'm running win2k and my disk is badly fragmented.
Defragmenter starts, does the analysys then starts to defrag and never
completes. It seems to get stuck right away and never move.
I've tried running it in safe mode. I've tried killing as many processes as
possible.
I've tried running chkdsk.

I still can't get it to run.
Is there any solution?

I assume you mean the basic defragmenter that comes with Win2K? How long
have you waited? It can sometimes take a long time for it to scan and
check things first. Also, if your computer has an activity light, is it
flashing? If it's moving a huge file, the screen may not update for
quite awhile.

Consider downloading one of the trial versions of Diskeeper and other
defraggers. At the minimum, you could run it to get it defragged, then
uninstall it and use the basic defrag to maintin the computer.

The fuller the partition the longer it's going to take but should always
finish even if little was accomplished.

Thanks for the responses.

The partition is only about 30% full.
I've started it and left it for about 30 minutes and it never budges. The
blue progress bar goes about 10% out and never moves from there. There is no
progress in the defrag status windows. Nothing changes.

Try running chkdsk first from the RC after full backup.

After backup you can run;
chkdsk /r
from the recovery console command line. (/r implies /f and /p)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks. At
the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows 2000
installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %windir% or %systemroot%
