Defrag and Scan Disk

I am using Windows XP Pro. I have started having a
problem where I can not run the defragmenter on my
computer. If I use "Run" and type in "defrag", I get a
flash on the screen and then return to the desk top. If
I run defrag from the performance area, the defrag screen
comes up and I can analyze the hard drive but when I try
to compact it, it does nothing. This has just started.
Is there something I can do to fix it or should I just
restort to an earlier time. Thanks

Not sure if this will help, but you must have at least 15%
of your hard drive as free space before you can defrag.

Before you start try checking the volume for errors
(including disk surface scan), and disable any programs
that could interrupt the process such as screen savers or
other power saving features of XP.

If you didn't know, Microsoft suggests using a third party defragmenting
tool. A suggestion is O&O defrag from O&O software. I used this at work on
one of my 2000 server machines and it would defrag when the built in
defragger wouldn't. It also requires the 15% free space, but at the same time
this can be worked around if you ask it to. It just takes a really long time.
Hope this helps.
