If you check up a few threads there are some potential fixes posted,
but the results seem to be more serendipity than science. I gave up
and just uninstalled/reinstalled WD, taking the updates (but not NET),
and it finally loaded the most recent. Since these updates have been
coming 2-3/week lately, I hope this is not going to become a habit.

You need to manually update from the windows update site then do custom
update and the update will be listed from there after that you should have no
more problems. Atleast for now.

Go to the windows update site and manually update from the custom button and
the issue will be resolved atleast for now.

Sorry, but It doesn't work puch more in that way, the proposal Update has a
size of 0 ko, and windows update (in custom mode) proposes the same Update
everyday.

I had same problem. Go to control panel and use add remove to repair
Defender then update -- It worked for me

Like I said, more serendipity than science; i.e., that works for you,
but not me or the next person. The very (il)logic of the steps
you had to take should indicate the problem.

That doesn't work for me, neither does going to Microsoft UPdate and clicking
to download those files. This program is shit.

Another user reports that this works successfully (I did something similar
and have had not problems since then):

Step 1:
============
1. Click Start, click Run, type "msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" (without quotation marks) in the Open
box, and then click OK.
2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from this
following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
3. Run the utility from Start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean Up.
4. Select the Windows Defender Definition file entry from the list
and click Remove.
Step 2:
============
1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Please go to Microsoft Update:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and install the updates for
Windows Defender.

Done all the above the Defender updated and work to perfection.

And for those that have problem updating their Defender:

Before removing a program it must be stop and exited.
Stop and close Defender as follows: Click the Tool tab / General Settings /
scroll down to Real time protection options and uncheck Turn on real-time
protection (recommended) / click Save and exit. If you are also using
Windows Live
One Care, go to View and change settings and on the Antivirus tab select Off,
click Ok and exit. Then follow the instructions sent to me by Vanessa Hu, a
Microsoft Support Engineer.

Step 1:
============
1. Click Start, click Run, type "msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" (without quotation marks) in the Open
box, and then click OK.

3. Run the utility from Start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean Up.
4. Select all Windows Defender related entries from the list (if there are)
and click Remove.
Step 2:
============
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Download and install Windows Defender from the following link and reboot
the computer:

Windows Defender.

Done all the above the Defender updated and work to perfection.
