Since I choose NOT to let a program update itself as many others also do,
this message isn't useless to them or me. I choose to update my programs
manually for the simple reason if an update causes a problem, i know where
to start looking. And no we won't stop making announcements for Defender.

I disagree!
By announcing the release of the update as soon as it is noticed the poster
of the update link [usually Engel] has a chance to download it and post the
link early enough that those who use it can get it before the end of the work
day.
The reasons for updating manually have been discussed in the group many
times and I will not go into them here. If you really want to know you can
search.
