Defender update failed to install

I checked for the new update using the button. It downloaded, but then gave
me a message saying it was unable to install correctly. However, it now tells
me that it's up to date with version 1.14.1729.5, and won't update again.

Never happened before. Can someone point me to the correct procedure please?

Just a bit more weird info: according to Event Viewer, there wasn't a
problem, and the update is recorded there. If I visit Windows Update and
check update history, it says the update was successful. What's going on?

Wait! Stop! I know what happened!
I downloaded the update and up came the panel asking me if I wanted to
install. It took me a minute to respond, and meanwhile (as I've noticed it
tends to do) it had actually started to install itself regardless of my
response. By the time I clicked the install button, it had already done the
job, and hence I got a 'failed to install' message.
