Defender non beta

I understood that the new WD (not the Beta 2 version) is now out, so I
uninstalled the beta version and downloaded and installed what I thought to
be the final (non beta) version, only to find that it is showing as beta 2,
and had to get all the updates so that the Definition Version is
1.14.1742.4created on 30/10/2006. Could someone please explain why this is
so. I am using XP SP2 Professional.

Hello Geoplay;
Well I'm certainly running the Final version, and my definitions are
exactly the same as yours. Where are you seeing that it says Beta 2, on
the definition updates in Windows Update? The most important piece of
information you need to check is the WD version level shown in the GUI
Help: About Windows Defender which is the small white downward pointed
arrow to the right of the blue question mark at the top of the WD screen.
If you have the current Final release it should show this:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1592.0

I have tried to download the final version three times, and each time I get
the beta 2 version, and then I update , and end up with definition version
1.14.1821.5 created on 01/11/2006. The date format is the British one. I am
not in U.S. Is that why I can't get the Final version yet?

You ask where I am seeing Beta 2; immediately above the arrows and Home;
Scan; History: Tools; the Query, and the downward pointed white arrow.

Hello Geo;
Thanks for clarifying that. I wanted to make sure you weren't seeing the
word Beta on the definition updates where it still does say Beta even if
your running the Final version of the product. Most of the world including
the US is still running WD Beta2.

I suspect what's happening to you, judging by our past experience with
conversions from Beta1 to Beta2 etc., is that it takes time for the
software distributions to make it out to servers scattered around the
world. Strange I know, but that's what happened during past major
upgrades. So while you've downloaded three times before, lets concentrate
on making sure you are initially getting the final product download. When
I go to www.microsoft.com and navigate to the more downloads page they show
there's a New download for Window Defender *, clicking that link takes me
to a page where the language says "Windows Defender no longer supports
Windows 2000 as mainstream support ended in June 2005." Then further down
the page it shows the following:
Version: 1592
Date Published: 10/23/2006

If that's what you see (again version 1592 is the important number) then
that's the Final Current Version, so re-download and SAVE that file to your
harddisk where you can find it again. Next, I recommend you clean up your
temp and junk files using either CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?f=3 or at least Start >
Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Then disconnect
from the internet (even if it means pulling the cable) and shut down all
security applications (both AV and any AS) you have running. At that point
go back to where you saved the WindowsDefender.msi file and double click it
to start the install. After the install, don't forget to turn back on the
security apps before you reconnect to the net... or simply reboot your
computer and reconnect to the net. When it comes back up force a check for
updates using the downward pointing arrow next to the ? icon.

If you can't find that download page described above, then the code hasn't
made it to the UK yet. Ms will eventually notify you that a new update is
available, and you might have to wait until that point, but I think this
should work at some point before that official notification... You're not
exactly in a remote corner of the world. Let us know if you can't access
the page offering Version 1592 on it.
