Defaulting an expanded subdocument view on a protected master docu

I have a master / sub document setup and I want to protect the master
document from changes but also ensure that when the master is opened, the sub
doc text is shown, as opposed to the hyperlink to the sub doc.

Expanding the sub doc view results in displaying the subdoc text in the
master. However, upon opening the master document, I always get a defaulting
collapsed sub document view.

Is there any way to defualt an expanded sub document view upon opening a
master document?

Thanks!
