Default in internet explore keeps does not reset

I am referring to internet explorer. I have just bought a new computer
and it has Windows XP Home on it.

When I initially started to use it it had MSN as the home page. I
changed it to have google as my home page. This worked satisfacorilly
for a while untill without me doing anything the home page changed to
the site

res://mshp.dll/index.html#22776

I do not want this site to be my home page so I tried to change the
homepage site by goint through the steps

tools/internet options/ and then typing a new hompepage site in the
section / apply / OK

this does change the home page for the next time I use internet explorer
but on subsequent times it always returns to

res://mshp.dll/index.html#22776

as the home page - and this is the site remembered as Set default.
Thisd is very frustrating and i would much prefer to open internet
explorer to have either MSN or Google as my home page but i keep getting
directed to

res://mshp.dll/index.html#22776

as my default. I have also tried using the Set as Homepage link on the
MSN home page site but i always get redirected to

res://mshp.dll/index.html#22776

on the second and all subsequent connections to internet explorer. I
know this is a littlelong winded but i hope you can give me information
as to how to avoid this link taking place.

Many Thanks

this i know is very frustrating it happened to me look in favorites and see if their is anything that wasnt their before next go to add/remove and see the same. i tried and tried all configurations and to extent nothing worked u have been hijack by some malisious program probably tagged when visiting a web site or surfing (happens) try downloadind(spybot search n destroy (free) if that doesnt work u might have to do a system recovery. pain in the u know what but it works watch your backing up though u could back up the bad program.

Dave,

I had the same problem. I use XP and like you my home
page was replaced by: res://mshp.dll/index.html#22776.

I used anti-virus, cleaned the registry, perform a clean
boot but all wiht no results. Until someone on the forum
mentionned that my browser might have been hijacked by a
spyware. More info on spyware is available at:
http://www.spywareinfo.com

I went to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
which has a good explanation. Go to H and scroll down to
Home Page Hijacked.

I used AdAware or Spybot they were cleaning the
spyware and the registry entries it came back.

I tried HijackThis, and thanks to the list of BHOS posted
at http://www.spywareinfo.com/bhos/ I managed to find the
culprit. I cleaned them but this nasty version had
installed a boot .exe file so it reinstalled itself after
I rebooted my PC. I finally managed to find the .exe file
that created the problem but could not delete or
desinstall it.

If yous is as nasty as mine, the solution is a little
program that clean the whole lot. It is available at
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Good luck.
