Default gateway

Hi all.

I've to configure an ADLS router/firewall for my little internal LAN,
obviously the router internal LAN interface will be the TCP/IP default
gateway of my 3 PCs with XP pro SP2.

Is it mandatory that the IP of the LAN default gateway is the first (.1
in a /24 subnet) or the last (.254 in a /24 subnet) IP of the subnet?
Could I use, for example, 192.168.1.100 (subnet /24) ?

No, you can use any IP address you want, However, if you would ever be
considering to add more networked devices, it is a lot easier remembering that
the gateway is at the beginning, or at the end, of the IP address ranges.


Example 1:

192.168.1.1 -- gateway

PCs/printers/streaming media players can now have all the IP addresses within
the range of 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254.


Example 2 :

192.168.254 -- gateway

PCs/printers/streaming media players can now have all the IP addresses within
the range of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.253.


These two examples show an easy set up so that you should not have too many
problems when adding networked PCs/printers/streaming media players to yor
network. No overlap of IP addresses thus no network problems based on two
units having the same IP address.
