DCOM error, possibly after SP2 removal

Ever since I reinstalled after installing SP2, I've had a grand wealth
of headaches. Right now I'm trying to deal with this DCOM-related
error every so often:

Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server using
DefaultLaunchPermssion. The server is:
{00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
The user is Unavailable/Unavailable, SID=Unavailable.

This seems to coincided w/ActiveX related errors I sometimes get on
web pages. I disabled the DCOM device, because it always hangs on
start, and that delays startup by a couple of minutes! How do I fix
this?

I'm running WinXPHE SP1. Don't tell me to install SP2, 'cuz that's
what caused this problem in the first place!

Install the whole SP2, not the partial things from the update page.

"{00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}" is the DCOM ID for MS Word 6.0 and
7.0 documents, so I would recommend reinstalling or running a repair of
Office.
