DCOM error after installing Frontpage 2003

Thought I'd try this NG first since my problem seems to be related to
installing Frontpage 2003.

I'm getting a rash of Error events in the System Log. These are:
Source: DCOM
EventID: 10010
The server {serverid} did not register with DCOM within the required
timeout.

Here's what I have: Windows XP SP2, Office Professional 2003. FrontPage
was loaded from my SBS 2003 SP1 cds. My workstation is a domain member.

Immediately after installing Frontpage, I was prompted to run Office
Update. This I did, and among others, Office SP2 downloaded again. (I
already had applied long ago).

The next day, two applications began generating these DCOM errors:
Google Toolbar and MSN Messenger. It doesn't matter if FP is running or
not. I've since uninstalled the toolbar and quit running Messenger. I'm
wondering, though, if I'm going to continue to see this problem when I
run other programs that were okay before the FP install (presuming this
is even related to FP and the updates.)

Is this a unique problem? If so, I'll go away and try this out in the XP
NG.

I don't think this is a unique problem. One of the things to keep in mind is
that FrontPage, and the other Office application, all share some files in
common. Whenever you install a product that users shared files with another
app or app suite, such as Office, it tends to over-write a lot of the
updates that were installed for that app. Essentially, it reverts part of
Office back to it's original shipping state. This also happens when you
install certan features of the OS after you've applied service packs. Mostly
I would guess the other apps have some level of integration with a feature
or two of office. MSN Messenger, for example, can integrate with Outlook to
show when contacts are online. Because certain shared features may have been
over-written this could have broken some of the MSN messenger features that
now doesn't know exactly what's going on. You may just have to re-install
some apps that integrate with the Office suite or make use of some parts of
Office.

Well, that makes perfectly good sense to me. Thank you for the input,

I think I'm going to do more or less exactly what you say: I'm going to
sit on this a bit and see what else, if anything, breaks. The toolbar
was merely a convenience (with it's own costs I might add). Messenger I
will reinstall. If that's the extent of it, or if the extent is products
integrated with Office, then it'll be okay. All of those products can be
uninstalled and reinstalled.

I did do a DCOM Hotfix rollup 12 a couple months ago. I think there's
even a rollup 13 now. Maybe I'll get that Hotfix and apply it on the off
chance that the office service pack overwrote part of the newer dcom
stuff. Maybe, as you say, I ended up with a mish-mash of versions.
