Daylight savings time did not update.

My brother has an HP slimline about two years old and his PC clock did not
update this morning. He had it set on Pacific time and the PC only corrected
after he changed to Mountain time. PC is fired up daily so it hasn't been
sitting for a long time. Is this a big deal? What's the fix, a new CMOS
battery? Never experienced this before. Running XP-SP2 and I believe XP Pro.
Thanks, Steve T.

I wouldn't think so, it did update didn't it?

Computers are just like any other piece of equipment, they work fine for a
while, then for no reason go wacko, then go back to everything is fine again.

Is KB942763 installed?

The time is correct IF he tells the PC that he is in Mountain Time Zone. If
he switches back to Pacific Time, the clock goes back one hour. Steve T.

Don't know but I will ask. I know his Windows Update has not worked for a
while now because he cannot update to SP3. Steve T.

1. Set it back to the correct time zone (Pacific).

2. Start here: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cp_dst

3. Why can't he install SP3?

Don't know the specifics. Just keeps getting error messages but since the PC
is running so good he hasn't really pushed it. He's about 200 miles away
from me so it's not like I can just sit in with him. I'll send this reply to
him and see what happens. Thank you, Steve T.

This may seem stupid, but has he checked the box that says automatically
adjust clock to daylight savings time. if not ask him to check the following
double click on the clock display lower right hand corner of the display, and
select the time zone tab and check the box.

Probably nothign to worry about; perhaps the dls update was missing? If
all updates aren't installed it could be waiting for the old date to
occur.
Or it could have just not been able to reach the time site. I doubt
very much a dls problem would relate to the battery but if it's 3 years
or more old it could be changed just for grins anyway.
If a time update failed to work, it'll be listed in the Event Viewer
as a few warnings and then a failure to update it. That's the easiest
way to tell if it tried to do it. If it didn't try, it may be a missing
update.

Ahh, sounds like the site he's getting the time from. Have him open the
time window and choose a different time site. Maybe the site was having
issues. Then again it might have corrected itself by the time you read
this.

Think about it again, Twayne, or maybe for the first time: Of course it'll
show the "correct time" if he lives in Pacific time zone and changes the
clock setting to Mountain time.

Belive other respondents have narrowed down the answer.

For the readers, a depleted/defective CMOS battery on the motherboard would
cause the CMOS and XP to go to the BIOS default date and time. So, the date
and the time would change. The default time is usually midnight.

The date and time are mutally affected when changing same in the bios
settings or XP. The CMOS battery retains this setting so you don't have to
keep changing it everytime you turn off the PC.

True, though I fail to see what you mean since that's apparently the
wrong time zone. Someone else suggested the dls tick which seemed like
a good possibility.
You can choose different time-sync sources and I simply suggested
trying a different source. Sorry if I confused anyone.

With all the switching around of the change dates I'd guess it's not
too unusual to have one out of sync. We have two self-setting clocks
ourselves which haven't set themselves for some reason and they both
show as synchronized, though they both worked right the last two time
changes. The computer OTOH switched OK.

Ok a couple of things I found out. When he tries to update to SP3 he gets
this error message: "Setup could not verify integrity of the file
update.inf. Make sure Cryptographic service is running on this computer".
He ran msconfig, click the services tab and the service is checked.
When he followed PA's support link, he got the same error message but the
title bar of the error message said KB955839 setup error.
How else can he verify that the required service is running? Thanks, Steve
T.

The computer is infected with hijackware! Format & do a clean install of
Windows.
