I've tried to enter a date into a cell...i've tried every date format
thinkable (5.1.08, 5/1/08, 5/08, 5.08 and similar versions with the four
digit year and two digit month (2008, 05), and excel reverts to the same
result....1-May. How can I stop excel from autoformatting? BTW- this is in
excel 2007

Lol. "Mayday !"

Change of format on entry is often a confirmation that Excel has accepted
your entry as a date. The formula field displays the real cell value, what
the cell displays is not important for calculations.

If the format bothers you, format the cell(s) in question as another date
format. If you want to display exactly your keyboard entry then preformat
the cells as text. But then they stop being dates, they are date-looking
text, most often a better reason to cry "Mayday !"

Best wishes Harald
