Date viewed as number

Despite using the format cell command and changing
to "date" and sellecting my required display type the
date always is shown as a number. However in the formula
box at the top the date is correct when highlighted. Itsd
driving me mad. Please help!

Hi
does the following help after changing the format:
- select an empty cell and copy it
- select your date cell
- goto 'Edit - Paste _Special' and choose 'Add'
