Damned XP Activation

I have a Dell PC running XP Pro. I recently have all sorts of trouble and as
a result my security centre refuses to start. I have also recently run
windows update and my legitimate copy of XP that came with the pc has now
become unactivated. I have followed the instructions to activate the product
but I don't have the "activate wondows" option. The dell Website advises me
to type oobe/msoobe /a in the run window but this does not fire dup the
activation window as promised. I'm now getting to the point where this
computer is taking over my life and as I have a wedding in less than 10 weeks
the future Mrs is already discussinf dovorce. Can anyone help????

I had a problem with Remote assistance whilst helping my Dad and carried out
a fix from Microsoft which didn't fix it but managed to screw everything else
up. I am at present running SP2

do you remember what fix did you use?
How do you know your XP it's not activated anymore? This can happend if you
repaired it. I've tryed oobe/msoobe /a and for me it's working fine. You
should see a window which is teling you that your windows it's already
activated, and I bet your's is too otherwise you should see a key in system
tray.

Don't want to sound mean, but this is supposed to be a Vista newsgroup. Never
mind though. Anyway, I thought you don't have to activate XP Pro? It should
work fine without? Or is this because it's a Dell customised copy? Please
correct me if I'm wrong.

False. This is microsoft.public.windowsXP.general. Whatever you're
smoking, I want some ;-)

*This* isn't a Vista newsgroup. This is Windows XP General.

I will not blame Microsoft for this. I have been in business for a very long
time fixing computers. A lot of my clients are those that bought Dell
Computers(sorry Dell). Dell installs everything customers do not ask for,
e.g. offers from software vendors, adwares, and some limited use
applications that bugs the user if they want to purchase it, etc, etc. Most
of them are difficult to uninstall by a non-techie. They tweak the operating
system (WinXP). Technical support is not always the best. XPpro is one of
the best OSs out there for the non-techie.

The worst case is to have a clean install of the OS. Just make sure you have
all the device drivers from Dell and your activation code from MS before
doing so.

Reboot your computer into "Safe Mode".
While in Safe Mode, rename the wpa.dbl and wpa.bak files located in the
\Windows\system32 folder.

This will force activation on the following boot,
but should remove the message that you are already activated message.
Sometimes if these files get corrupted, they can cause this type of problem.

Lots of VISTA groups around. This isn't one of them. Hey dude, you got a
Dell. (Dell = full of things you don't want there.)

1. As others have pointed out, this is a WinXP newsgroup. Vista groups
are down the hall somewhere.

2. In general *any* copy of Win XP (Home, Pro, or Media Center) must
be activated. OP is running a Dell computer, which would have come
with an OEM copy of XP Pro (in this case), which would already have
been activated. There are various things you can do to the computer
which will make the OS ask to be activated again. Running Windows
Update should *not* cause the OS to re-activate.

Aargh, sorry!! Really really sorry, I'm brand new here. I just saw the title
"Windows Vista Newsgroups" and presumed... Maybe I should keep my mouth shut
until I know what I'm doing. OK, I'm really confused now, I really thought
that with a page entitled "Windows Vista Newsgoups" I would be posting to a
newsgroup on the topic of Windows Vista. Really sorry people!

Next time get a real MS CD for the OS you want to run.

Only if Add-Remove Programs is too much for your "non-techie".
The worst case is to have a clean install of the OS. Just make sure you have

The OEM XP cd which came with the unit should have all the drivers it
needs, and there is no activation.

YES, I am aware that some buyers do a clean install immediately. I
consider that absurd.
