customize text in table of content/figures

Hi,
I have a long document with a lot of figures. For each figure I inserted a
catpion with the Insert -> Reference -> Caption command. Then I added some
text after the figure caption (eg. Figure 1 - General map of Alaska). When I
created the Table of Figures the text appears with the figure caption and
number. This is fine in general, but often the text following the figure
number is too long and I would like to insert only a limited amount of words
(possibly I would like to define how many words per each entry). The problem
is that, unless I use a return character, I don't know how to change style of
the caption so that only the first part is the caption itself. Thank you for
your help.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?Z2lvdmFubmk=?=,

Your table of figures is currently picking up its entries from the CAPTION
style. You should also be able to use TC fields to gather information for the
TOF (same as for a TOC). In this case, you either want to use TC fields
exculsively, or create a Caption-No-TOC style to format the entries you do not
want to pick up directly, but use a TC field.

You'll find more information in Word's Help on TC field and on TOC. Click the
"Options" button to see the interface where you can choose the style name andset
it to pick up TC fields. You'll also want to read up on using switches in TOC
fields.
