Custom Borders

I have selected text and I wish to apply a custom border. When I go to the borders and shading menu and select custom and then go to the preview box and try to apply a format the setting changes from custom to box. However, if I try to apply to the paragraph instead of the text I don't get that result and the setting remains on custom. Is there any way to format just the text and not the paragraph. My text is a section name that appears alone on a line. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

The only border allowed for text is a box.
