In a slide show, I would like to fade an image out while fading another image
in. So there is a period with some overlap of the two images. Is that
possible (Office XP).

Yes of course
Put a fade out on the first image and put a fade in With previous on the
second image which is "above" the first one.
Put a fade out on the second image with previous and with a delay of let say
5 seconds...And so on
