Custom Animation Motion Path

I am desperately, and unsuccessfully trying to figure out why I can't see the
option for adding a motion path to my PPT slide. I am running PowerPoint
2003 in Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003. The directions clearly
state that "In the Custom Animation task pane, click Add Effect, point to
Motion Paths". Not only do I not have "Add Effect" in my Custom Animation
task pane, I also can't see Motion Paths. Its almost like I'm looking in
the completely wrong place. For clarification, I am selecting Slide Show
from the top of my "normal view" PPT window, then I select Custom Animation,
then am looking for "Add Effect" under the effects tab, but don't see it, and
subsequently never get to "motion paths"... The directions to do this seem
perfectly reasonable, I just can't find "Add Effect" in my Custom Animation
Task Pane... Any idea why I am not seeing this? Thanks so much!

Hi Darren

Do you have something on the slide selected? If you have nothing selected
the add effects button is greyed out in the custom animation task pane. Can
you see the task pane at all?

Thank you so much for the speedy reply. I do have something on the slide
selected, but I still don't see a greyed out "add effects" button. You're
getting to the heart of my issue. First, I'm not terribly sure I'm looking
at the correct "Task Pane" - The one I'm looking at is the Custom Animation
Pane that is opened when you select Slide Show from the top page of PPT then
select "Custom Animation". When I've tried to find a different task pane
(on the right hand side, I don't see any logical option which shows "custom
animation"...

Ok. Try this and report back :)
1. Press ctrl+F1 a few times - it should toggle the task pane on the right
hand side on and off (to check that's working).
2. Leave it turned it on and click on the drop down arrow next to the name
of the task pane - this should give you a list of available task panes (e.g.
Help, Clipboard, Slide layout).
3. Select Custom Animation from the drop down
4. Click on an element in your slide to select it
5. What do you see in the task pane?

Step 1 - works fine.
Step 2 - works fine.
Step 3 - "Custom Animation" is not present in the drop down... So, I can't
get to Step 4 or Step 5...

Aha! Go to Tools -> Options -> Edit -> make sure 'New Animation Effects' is
unticked

Hope that's it ;-)
