Cursor problems with my windows xp

My father was using my laptop, which has Windows XP
installed and he encountered the following problem that I
have never heard of before. He said that underneath the
mouse cursor (the arrow), there appeared a box with a
cross in it. He said that he could not click or choose
any options with the mouse, which is a touchpad. He also
said that when he moved the cursor to the start menu
a "do not" sign (the circle with the diagonal line across
it) appeared on top of the cursor. This has never
happened before to me on any computer.

Your father's computer is either infected with a virus or some kind of
malware. Scan his machine with a good up to date AV program and then
use anti-malware software to scan for problems.
