cursor pauses while typing

HELP! when I'm typing (in any program on my computer) my cursor hesitates
which causes missing characters. This happens approx. every minute or so.
The cursor doesn't keep up with my typing when this hesitation occurs. When
the hesitation is finished the characters that i JUST TYPED appear and not
the characters pressed during hesitation. I type 90 wpm and this drives me
crazing. Is something going on in the background? I'm using Windows XP
