curiouser and curioser

I find it very curiose that in almost all cases when I try to test the
problem, I am unable to reproduce it. Iam running an AMD 64bit dual
processor,1gig 2,8 high speed memory,Windows XP, SP1 and SP2, IE6, PcCillin
2006, Kerio firewall. Also, to check things I also have AdAware and Spybot.
I use automatic updates on all the software. What I find curious is that in
almost a year of using MSAS I have not encountered a single problem. I have
been testing MSAS in a true Beta environment--a seperate partition. I don't
know why this is the case--in the words of Louis G Carroll "Curiouser and
Curioser. I am looking for an answer--Any body got one.

PcCillin2006 may well be the answer. The beta test of it produced a really
minimum of bugs and the test itself was very well structured. I had been
using PcCillin 2005 and when I tested 2006 found it stable and solid. I
personally think it is the best anti spyware and anti virus around. I reall
wish that MSAS was in a more rigid test environment. Oh well software goes
on and on.

Why don`t you wait until Beta2 before making the comparison? MSAS in its
present (Beta 1). cannot be compared favourably until MS has had the
opportunity to recode the product on a relatively equal par with the
opposition. Let us not forget, they have intentionally chosen to keep MSAS
in its present format while affording themseleves the opportunity to develop
WD and keeping the masses interested in the program. A delicate balancing
act, but one which I am confident, will succeed.
There are many things for us to look forward to this year.

Hi Stu

Beta 1 or Beta 2 or version xy, MS must deside
how to fill the gap for all Trojan.downloaders.

Are they only going to warn about "unwanted software" ?

Must One Care be used to remove the trojan ?
(If you put all eggs in the same basket)

I am never going to fill my basket with only MS apps so
it´s a important fact for a lot of users how they will deal with these
pests coming from a mafia.

This is the question I'd like to see clearly answered, too.

It is clear that Windows Defender will not be a substitute for an up-to-date
antivirus application. How is the line between what the Antivirus app needs
to cover and what Windows Defender will cover defined? What if your
antivirus didn't do the job?

If you hit an unpatched vulnerability, and the bad guys push trojan code
onto your system, and then use that trojan to put spyware in place, you need
to

1) plug the vulnerability

2) remove the trojan

3) remove the spyware

It won't do much good to do #3 without at least #2 as well.

Hi Bill

This key question probably also MS
has as a standard weekly key discuss issue ;)

If they could speed up "the scanning monster"
whick lives in Safety Live ! ?

Bill Sanderson has brought this to us :

Safety.live takes hours on my system. It does find things, but only things
I know are there. I've yet to try it on a "suspect" system--I'm not sure
I'd have the patience to wait.....

There is a question about how many real-time scanners you should have in
place and running at the same time. If you get you spyware and virus
protection from the same vendor, they can be running via the same
scanner--different sigs, and perhaps some slightly different testing.

It'll be interesting to see how beta2/Windows Defender does in a broad test
with lots of different antivirus vendors and machines represented.

Hi Bill

Compare it with Housecall or Panda !
Live is a "scanning monster" compared to them ;)

About real time scanners it´s obvious that
one is enough.

But the key issue is that someone must remove this
undetected trojan and maybe Safety Live could be a
good start scanner for this removal.

I cannot recommend beacuse of endless scanning time
and lack of routine to always remove "the clutter" to save
scantime !

It will probably be the same with Beta 2 or the real defender.

A trojan is a trojan and it must be removed, or a Smitfraud infection.
