Ctrl + Alt + Del menu disapearance

The Ctrl + Alt + Del menu has stopped working on my XP
Pro PC.

Occasionally it will apear for about 2 seconds then
close, but most of the time nothing happens when I press
Ctrl + Alt + Del.

Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL should bring up the task manager (if using the welcome
screen to login, which is on by default).

If you are wanting to lock the workstation, press the WindowsKey+L, or Start ->
Log Off -> Switch User

Hello!
Ctrl+Alt+Del brings TaskManager.
Check your settings here: For Pro

Start/Run/gpedit.msc. User Configuration/Administrative
Templates/System/Crtl+Alt+Del Options. In the right pane
double click Remove Task Manager and enable it.

Also, if you have disabled the Alerter Service, CAD will be
disabled. If neither of these are the case and the Task
Manager only opens for a few seconds, then closes:

This behavior can be caused by a virus. One of two:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

If this is not the case: Check your settings here

Taskmgr.exe should be listed in the %SystemRoot%\system32
directory. If you cannot find the file, you can extract it
from the Windows XP CD.

extract the file taskmgr.exe from the XP cd. the file name
will be taskmgr.ex_. you need to expand it

expand cdrom:\i386\taskmgr.ex_ c:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe
expand cdrom:\i386\taskmgr.ex_ c:\windows\taskmgr.exe

You have a virus.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Create Emergency Copies of Critical
XP System Utilities. This small VB Program will create backup, usable
copies of Task Manger, Regedit and MSConfig (named Taskmgr1.exe, Regedit.com
and MSConfig1.exe) in a new folder C:\EmergencyUtil. Many virus programs
will intercept these programs, based on their original file name. The
modified file names, allow them to be run. Open Windows Explorer to
C:\EmergencyUtil and double click the application you need. The next
revision will allow you to browse for the folder you want to place the
backups in.

Additionally, see the Win XP Utilities section for Startup Programs Tracker.
This small utility scans your system for startup programs and running
processes. It also allows you to create a log file that can be copied and
pasted into a newsgroup post. The contents of the program window are also
copied to the Windows Clipboard, automatically.
