I hope someone here can help me! I am unable to update
my computer. I have 5 critical updates to install and
they won't work. Cryptographic Services is disabled and
I can't get it enabled!!! I don't know how it ever got
turned off. I have tried command prompt and really
everything except going to recovery console, whic I am
not really comfortable doing. If I just leave it am I
putting my system at risk? Someone please tell me what
to do!

Hi there,

Have you had the Blaster Worm virus (or is it possible that
you have?) I've had the virus, and in trying to recover the
system, I can't install the necessary patch because my
cryptographic service is disabled.

If you go to Start - Programs - Administrative Tools -
Services and find the crpytographic service, then
right-click and choose properties, you'll see that it's
dependant on the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service, which
is the one that this virus attacks and shuts down.

Dunno if that helps - I'm stuck on it. Microsoft claim that
help on their security patches etc is free, but you can't
get that free support anywhere on their support site unless
you purchased your product directly ie not with your
computer (OEM) so that's just about everyone out the window.

Let me know if you fix it.

Al
