crt w/ fuzzy lines

I have a Proview 19" CRT monitor. This monitor works great for th
most part, but at random it gets horizontal fuzzy line (I'm not sur
how else to explain it). It doesn't really distort the image o
anything. Just these grayish/white fuzzy lines that go horizontall
accross the screen. Sometimes the whole screen is covered with i
and other times its only parts.

When at desktop sometimes it seems as though the "lines" are comin
off the icons on the desktop. The monitor has been hooked up t
several completly different computers and still has the same proble
(so I know it's not the computer)

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it

Need one more piece of information to be sure - when this happens,
are the lines at a slight angle, rising left to right, and does the screen
seem to be overall somewhat brighter and more washed-out?

If so, then what you're seeing are the lines which occur during
vertical retrace, which are normally blanked - and the problem
is that you're for whatever reason losing blanking during the vertical
retrace interval (or, quite possibly, the overall bias on the CRT
is changing intermittently and bringing EVERYTHING that should
be blanked out of blanking - and you're just noticing these lines
because they're the most obvious).

They don't seem to rise has it goes to the right, unless it's a very
subtle amount, I've never actually sat down and concentrated on
wether it had an angle to it.

The lines appear to be like white static that goes across the screen,
slightly transparent. Even if it is one of the times it takes up the
whole screen I can still see everything on the screen. The screen
only appears washed out under the lines themselves. Most of the
time it's not the whole screen though, only parts.

The lines do not always even go fully across the screen horizontally.
Alot of the time the line will originate somewhere in the middle and
then they always travel all the way off to the right. The lines
ALWAYS go left to right. The lines never travel off the left after
starting in the middle.

It seems as though the lines will originate off of items on your
screen, like icons on the desktop, text below the icons, or windows
themselves. Actually come to think of the lines are only full screen
when playing a full-screen game.

Alot of the time if I smack the side of the monitor hard enough they
go away for anywhere from 1 second up to me being done with the
computer.

The problem is only annoying, I can still see everything on the
screen. It is fairly high on the annoying scale though.

Sounds more like "smearing", and like there is probably a cold solder
joint somewhere along the "video chain" circuitry - possibly a coupling
cap. Not easy to troubleshoot without a 'scope & schematic, etc.
Or, it may be a connection somewhere along the chain has developed
oxidation.
Either way, it will likely involve openoing up the unit, which is not a
task recommended for anyone without some experience & understanding
of electronics.

It sounds like you have a fan, or a heater, something with a motor,
sharing the same circuit with the monitor. Vacuum cleaners are
notorious for this. Trace the circuit down. If it's intermittent,
look for something that's not on all the time, such as a
refrigerator, air conditioner etc.

Or, you have something magnetic too close to the screen. It doesn't
sound like that however, as you said the lines don't angle.

You may also look to see if the monitor has a degauss button.

Hey, I've been having the same problem with my Dell laptop

I bought a Dell desktop earlier and had the same problem. It turne
out that if I just turned the monitor off and back on a couple time
the problem would self-correct, but that's not working with m
laptop

Basically, to describe the problem, there are invisible, horizonta
lines that mess up the way the screen displays things. It's almost a
if there are back-shadows to the text. It occurs about every 5 pixels
vertically. So, one line of text will be blurry and the next will hav
a slight shadow behind it. It looks really weird, and it's quit
uneasy on the eyes

I have tried turning my laptop on and off and on and off, but i
hasn't fixed yet, and I don't really know what to do
