crossover crisis

Ok, i am a bit new at networking so please bare with me. I have two pc's,
both have winxp pro sp2, not oem versions. I have a nic card in each pc
connected with a crossover cat5 cable. I ran the wizard on both pcs and my
"pc 1" is the main pc. I configured "pc2" to connect to the internet through
pc 1.
I am able to detect pc2 , from pc 1 and pc2 knows it's connected to
something. on pc2, I get the error stating the computer could not assign an
ip address. Also, i can't view the shared folder of the other pc on pc1 or
vise versa. All i want is to transfer files and settings, game against my
son, and share an internet connection. Microsoft states this is the easiest
connection, 2 comps, and a crossover cable. I have had networkers check this
out and they are stumped. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. TIA
