Cross-references to Endnotes in Word 2003

I'm having two problems with cross-references to endnotes in Word 2003. It
may apply to other cross-references, I don't know.

First, the Find>Special>Field command cannot find a cross-reference to an
endnote unless the show field codes option (Alt F9 switch) is set to show
field codes. Is this normal?

Second, even though "insert as hyperlink" is checked in the Insert Cross
reference dialog box, clicking on the cross-reference doesn't go anywhere.
Isn't it supposed to?

I think that is normal. I always show field codes before trying to find
them.

Conceivably try control-clicking? Some hyperlink behavior got changed at
some point.
