Since you didn't tell us what you tried and what you don't understand,
this may be a repeat of your actions.

Find the file you want to open. Right-click on the file icon. You will
get a context menu and one of the choices will be "Open with". A
pop-out menu will appear with various programs listed and at the bottom
"Choose Program". Left-click on "Choose Program". Now you'll get the
Open With box that will allow you to choose the program you want to
associate with this type of file. Choose Paintshop Pro and check the
box at the bottom that says "Always use the selected program to open
this type of file". Click "OK" and your file is associated with
Paintshop Pro.

This only works if:

1. You have Paintshop Pro installed on your computer.
2. Paintshop Pro can open this type of file.

Maybe that will not work because Open with is not available in unknown file's
context menu.
Do this (OP):
Right click File > Properties > Change button > Choose Application > OK

FYI, if the "open with" is not available in the right click menu, you can press and hold the SHIFT key while right clicking and it will appear.

I tried but that didn't work :
I created a file with unknown extension (zzxx)
Clicked it
Pressed and hold "Shift" key
Right clicked
No open with available in the context menu.

Follow the above but select 'Open' instead of 'Open with'.

Yes, this is a bit tricky to visualize and frankly I don't really get
what/why you're doing whatever you're doing. If I understand correctly
what you want to do:

1. You are receiving emails with attachments.
2. You would like to be able to open the attachments.
3. The attachments are some sort of graphic files that used to open in
Paintshop Pro.
4. You don't have Paintshop Pro installed on your computer any more so
of course the attachments don't open in PSP.
5. For some reason you can see the attachments if you send the email to
yourself by forwarding it.

First, make sure you can see the normally-hidden file extensions (the
three letters after the "dot" in a file name, ex. picture.jpg) by going
to Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab and unchecking the box next to
"Hide extensions for known file types". Post back with the extension.

Second, when you receive one of these attachments instead of trying to
open it from within the email message, save it to somewhere on your
computer where you will find it.

After you post back with what the extension is, we can take this
further.

Since you have determined that the cause-and-effect is the removal of
Paintshop Pro 10 trial version and reinstall of Paintshop Pro 9 AND the
problem is related directly to Outlook Express, you should take your
troubleshooting here:

1. Post a full description of the problem and situation to the Outlook
Express newsgroup. Follow posting suggestions at the "good post" link
below, remembering that you need to express yourself clearly and
concisely, using correct punctuation and sentence structure, because
your posts are very difficult to follow. I'm not saying this to hurt
your feelings, but your posts are not an easy read and most people
won't take the time to bother with them. After all, your end goal is to
get answers.

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress - newsgroup
http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm - how to post

2. If the Outlook Express experts can't help you, then your only
recourse is to the tech support for Paintshop Pro.

I'm sorry that I was unable to help you. Good luck.

used to be able to just click on the attachment and the file opened up in
my psps9 it is only since i have taken out the psp10 that this is happening

Open PSP to its "Preferences" menu. I believe it's under File (File>
Preferences). Click the Associations menu and select the file types you
want PSP to handle for you.

I have the same problem. I think loading the trial of PSP really goofed me
up. I have since removed PSP from my computer. I can get all extensions
except .jpg My message reads: This file does not have a program associated
with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder
options control panel" I have gone to the folder options control panel and
found jpg there. I'm wondering what else I can do to get the association
back to Outlook Express. I'm pulling my hair out. Thanks.
Any help would be appreciated.

thanks for your reply. I feel like psp10 took over my system. Unfortunately
I think I'll have to call microsoft tomorrow which I am not thrilled about.
Maybe I could get an answer from Corel PSP. Did you ever try there? Thanks
