creating a cd / DVD

While trying to copy pictures to a CD, I am getting the message 'Windows
encountered a problem when trying to copy this folder. What do you want
windows to do?' and the choices are "retry, skip, or cancel. I have tried
different blank CD's, tried copying to another folder, then copying, tried
one pic at a time-- no success either way.

Any thoughts?

Is it just pictures?

What software?

Can you burn text files and zip files etc?

I haven't tried the others yet, but just discovered the problem is with
DVD's - the CD's burn fine. But I want to burn DVD's, as I want to mail them
away, and there are hundreds of pictures ,as well as movie clips I have
taken. These would load up a number of CD's.
Is it possible to put pictures on DVD's?

It is possible to put pictures on DVDs just as a data CD BUT you can't do it
with the built in burning program in XP. XP won't burn DVDs.

You need some other type of software like Roxio's Easy DVD/CD creator or
Nero's burning ROM. There are supposed to be free burning programs on the
internet also (Google search) but I haven't tried them as I use Roxio's
software.

It sure is, but now I have to ask what software you are using and what
hardware you use.

Not all software can burn a DVD nor can all hareware burn a DVD

Hi Happy,

If you are trying to burn the files to DVD using WINXP's built-in burning
utility, it does not support DVD.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been attempting to use XP, so will now
get some decent burning software for DVD's. I find XP worked fine for the
CD's, for all formats. My hardware is HP 3 Ghrtz, 1.5 RAM
(having built-in software would make operating system more useful-- does
VISTA have DVD burning software?)

Vista Home Premium and Ultimate has DVD burning software but not the Home
Basic or Business editions but I sure wouldn't upgrade my os just to burn
dvd's. Are you sure you don't have any software that came with that HP to
burn dvd's. I think HP typically supplies products from Sonic for systems
with dvd burners, at least my neighbors HP came with it but the burner only
supported DVD +R/RW, it would not do -R/RW.

May I suggest CDBurnerXP Pro.

Yes. The fact that they are pictures or movie clips is irrelevant. A
picture or movie clip is just a file of a particular type and you can
put on a DVD any file of any type that fits on it.

However, note these three points:

1. Is your drive a DVD drive or just a CD drive? If it's a DVD drive,
is it a DVD writer, or just a reader? They all look the same, but not
all drives can burn DVDs.

2. DVDs come in two types: -R and +R. Unless your drive handles both
types, you need the correct kind of blank DVDs for your drive.

3. Windows XP has no native ability to write to DVDs at all. You need
third-party software (such as Nero) to do this.

Yes! Thanks. I searched through my icons & programs, and there is a program
(basic, but seems to fit the bill) from Sonic. I'll give it a try.

Thanks to everyone on this one. I appreciate having this advice, from people
who "tell it like it is". Saves me a lot of grief, as I am the 'resident
expert' in my house, and as you can see I am only about a 3 out of 10!

You're welcome. Glad to help.
