Create PDF file in Windows XP?

M

Mark

What utility or program can I use to create PDF file?

I already know that I can buy Adobe Acrobat, but I only want to create
PDF files from printing Word 2003 documents to the PDF printer. With
Adobe Acrobat, you would print the document to the PDFWriter. I am only
looking for that functionality in creating PDF files.

Thanks.

Hi,

PDF is a proprietary format that belongs to Adobe, only they define how
documents in that format can be created (and this is usually only allowed in
licensed (pay-for) versions of their software).

At work, we use PDF995, it works great & it's free...

I've been using CUTEPDF recently www.cutepdf.com and I've
used
WIN2PDF http://www.daneprairie.com/

Both function as "printers" to create basic PDF files.

OpenOffice can create .pdf files. I haven't done this, so I don't know
if it is as good as Adobe Acrobat's .pdf's.

CutePDF (wwww.cutepdf.com)

PDFCreator (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/)

Both are free. I use PDFCreator. I remember looking at both many months ago and picked PDFCreator but don't recall why. Maybe the install was easier because PDFCreator included the GhostScript files required by both products (although you can get PDFCreator with the AFPL version of Ghostscript whose license is more restrictive but a newer version of Ghostscript than the GPL version), but I also recall there were some features in PDFCreator that weren't in CutePDF, too.

Note that CutePDF *Writer* is free but CutePDF 3.0 is NOT free (costs $50).

mark,

i remember reading an article a while ago that said that there was software
built into xp that would let you create pdf's.

hope this helps.

Unfortunately OpenOffice does not read Word 2000 and 2003 documents very
well with various formatting. This is why I still have to use Microsoft
Word. Otherwise I would be using OpenOffice all the time. OpenOffice's
export to PDF feature works great, but OpenOffice Text Document (aka
Word) needs to correctly render the Word document.

Any references to this article? That would be better than a general
reference.

Thanks for the open-source reference. :)

I also found:

WinPDF
http://www.pdfdesk.com/winpdf.html

Download Now (FREEWARE, 738 KB, Version 1.00, Language: English)
http://www.pdfdesk.com/WinPDF.exe

that works great in Windows XP Home Edition SP1a so far.
