Create anonymous workgroup share on Windows 2000 Server?

R

Richard Perry

I am trying to create a shared directory on a Windows 2000 server in a
workgroup environment. I want to be able to have all workstations on the
network be able to read this share. When I do this with a Windows XP Pro or
a Windows 2000 Pro machine, I can accomplish this with no problem (if the
Guest account is enabled).

Would someone please explain to me if it is possible to create an anonymous
share, and if so, how?

If not, perhaps there is another way to accomplish my goal. I want to be
able to store software, clients, patches, etc on a Windows share. I want to
be able to go to any computer on the network, with any user that is logged
in (local users), and install a piece of software from this software share.

Like I said, I can make this happen on a 2000 Pro and XP Pro machine, but
seem to be failing on a 2000 Server....

Did you try to enable the guest account on the W2K server? If so anyone should have
access to shares that have everyone permissions for the share and to the ntfs
permissions for the folder. The user right for "access this computer from the
network" must also container everyone and the security option for additional
restrictions for anonymous connections must not be "no access without explicit
anonymous permissions" on the server. There is a KB link to an article about how to
create an anonymous/null share, but I have never tried it myself. See link below for
details on that. --Steve
