Create Adobe PDF error

Everty time I open Word (XP) I get the message "The create adobe pdf monitor
cannot be found. Please reinstall Create Adobe PDF". I have seen this
message posted before, with a reference that this is not a Word problem, but
rather something with Adobe. I reinstalled Adobe Reader (6.0), but the
problem occurs anyway. Any suggestions?

You need to find the add-in that Adobe has placed in Word's (or the Office)
Startup folder and remove it. It points to a facility you no longer have.
Adobe Reader does not have the ability to create PDFs, only to read them; to
create them you need the full Acrobat product or one of its clones.

You need to go to the file location for Tools to determine where the
erroneous file is located. In word go to Tools | Options | File locations for
file type Tools. Double click on the path and you should see file name
"PDFWRITER97.dot" in Startup folder. Delete this file and that should
eliminate the message.

Ignore that message. Not sure what causes your problem, but deleting
PDFMaker won't fix it.

Actually, it will. The version Graham refers to is an older one that was
distributed with Acrobat Reader, not the full Acrobat product, and doesn't
work with the current Adobe Reader.

All I know is that it worked for me and I'm just passing along the info. You
might also want to look in the Microsoft | Word | Startup folder for the same
file to delete. This only deletes the template pdf file that word is trying
to load, not PDFMAKER. I tried several other things but this is the only one
that worked for me.

Whoops! That should have been "The add-in Ralph refers to (PDFWRITER97.dot,
not PDFMaker.dot) is an old one..."

I have this same error. I followed the directions from RalphF, but the
Startup folder had no files listed in it. Is there another way to correct
this error?

Later versions of Acrobat install their add-in in the *office* startup
folder which will be at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\STARTUP (where 11 is the Word
version - here Word 2003)
