Crash/slow down and freezes during various virus scans

Hey all, I had a problem with mcafee and norton...I had macafee installed
first, then stupidly tried to instal norton as well...the instal failed and
subsequently mcafee virus scans started to freeze on a driver file which I
think was for Norton Symentec. I was advised to restart in safe mode and
delete both, then install either one of those programs or Kaspersky
Anti-Virus (because it's free and better apparently). Anyway, I deleted the
folders for McAfee because program remover said there was a problem
uninstalling the program. On the other hand in safe mode Norton Internet
Security 2005 told me to boot up in normal mode and uninstal (I tried but no
uninstal wizard appeared after clicking remove...in fact nothing at all
happened). Norton Internet Security 2005 still appears on the add/remove
program list, but has no file size to speak of.

So anyway, I installed Kapersky and ran the scan but it freezes mid scan (on
no specific file)...however if I challenge the system in any way at all (open
explorer, open msn, start a new text document, create a new folder) in begins
to check files again, I hear a faint sound (maybe the harddrive spinning into
action) then the scanner stops looking through files and freezes again
(having checked another 10 or 20 files)

Any ideas what my problem is here? I can still run brand new games on the
system, and use every program I have tried.

Thanks for your time (and sorry about all the parentheses ;) )
Alex

Hi
Sounds like there might still be some things left over from Mcafe
after the uninstall. Download ccleaner and set it up. Open it and unde
the heading on the left is the issus tag. Select this and run it. Shoul
find any probs you might have. Also would sugest useing AVG its free an
does a great job.Keep me posted.
