cpu usage/svchost.exe

My comp usage is 100% due to a svchost.exe process...would it be bad to end process on this? Ive tried every other recommendation and still my machine is running 100% CPU usage, making basic tasks a hastle...

I have EndItAll...one of the svchost is described as svchost.exe...whereas the others say "generic host process for Win32 Services" Does this mean its not like the others...or fake?
and should end that program

do you have antivirus software? MAP gave some good advice as it sounds like a virus. however there is antivirus software from end it all also. i have found that a not so good antivirus software that runs can soak up cpu usage. what if any, antivirus software are you using?

Greetings --

It's perfectly normal to have several instances of Svchost.exe
running simultaneously.

A Description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP

However, if Svchost.exe is using a large portion of your CPU
cycles, it has most likely been "hijacked" by a worm or Trojan. Have
you tried using a decent antivirus application with the most
currently-available virus definition files? A strong candidate would
be W32.Welchia.Worm.

W32.Welchia.Worm a.k.a. W32/Nachi.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.welchia.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms can disable antivirus
applications whose definitions weren't up-to-date, try using one or
more of the free on-line scanners to double-check your system.

I've been fighting the same problem for two days. CPU usage spiked to 100 and stayed there. Couldn't get my virus scanner to open either (using fix-it utilities). I just upgraded to fixit 5 (from fixit 4) and things seem to be back to normal. Virus scan showed nothing. Maybe something got screwed up in the original software? That's all I can figure
