Hi,
Sometimes but not always, after booting UP XP SP2 successfuly, i can
get to desktop and i can use computer to suff, but HDD activity
continues continues and continues, also CPU usage does not drop below
%40 (AMD Semptron 3100+) when computer is IDLE.

WHY?

Start up items:

McAfee Enterprise8 and its services with start-up files
CTFmon.exe
Googlenotifier.exe
Quicktime qttask.exe

Any idea?

I checked although i disable McAfee while this usage is in action, no
help.

What is the reason?

Is there any services of XP which does background operations related
to HDD like indexing or defrag or error checking. I don't think
because there was not any dialog box about these actions.

Thank you,

Note and update: My drive is FAT32 and Indexing is not available. So
what is the reason of increasement of HDD and CPU both at the same
time?

You need to find the specific process or application that's taking all
the CPU resources and slowing down your PC.

To do this try Process Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and 'Show Lower
Pane' options.
(This will provide the detailed info you need)
Next click on the CPU column to sort processes by %CPU usage.
Then click on the process that's using most or all the CPU %,
once it's highlighted, right click and from the options listed select:
google
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

Note: some entries like Explorer and svchost may need to be expanded to show
the detail,
(sub processes), in this case click on the + located to the left on the
entry.

Still another tool is What's Running

why not bring up Task Manager and see what it shows is using the CPU.

Thank you,

I always use standard task manager to see cpu usage.

But the problem is: Which process or file does eat from my CPU?

I want to know which process uses my CPU while CPU usage is high
although the computer is idle (not in use)...

Task manager shows overall CPU usage.

I sometimes have excessive HDD activity and CPU usage together
although the computer is idle.

So, is there a utility that shows the exact process eats from my CPU?
Not overall CPU usage.

Thanks...
